I’m a compulsive planner. Prior to trips for example, I’d spend nights pouring over online articles, travel forums, google maps and image libraries. I do this in hope of making every trip a dream adventure, be it for leisure or for work. I’m still in the obsessive habit given I haven’t quite experienced the perfect adventure.
My one and only visit to the famed Fushimi Inari Shrine of Kyoto, Japan, was in April 2015. By then, I had already been in Japan for a week and things had not been going well; it was raining nearly every day. Already, I had rescheduled the Fushimi visit twice, and the way things looked, it was either proceed or forget entirely about it . I decided to go, armed with two disposable ponchos and extra socks. My wistful hope was that the skies would run out of rainwater after spewing so much of it for days.
No such luck. I arrived at Fushimi in the midst of the heaviest downpour yet. I could barely get out of the train station because it was choked full of soaked tourists seeking shelter. After much effort I worked my way to a convenience store, one directly facing the shrine. There, I spent the next half an hour gazing forlornly at the shrine entrance, wondering why on earth there had to be such an occurrence called rain in our world.
Eventually I decided to brave it. I had already gone through two sando-ichis, one omu-rice and two coffees, and my feet were aching from standing. The ponchos wouldn’t helped, it was like standing under a waterfall in the rain with them, so I bought a 500 yen cheap umbrella from the store and ventured forth. After much trudging, I made it to the main complex and thank goodness it started to let up a little from then onwards. It was still wet and slippery everywhere, but at least I get to stand at the main complex, throw in my coins and clap my hands. I also managed a few shots with my handphone, which after heavy photoshopping, didn’t feel too disappointing.
Main Complex of Fushimi Inari Shrine, Kyoto.
Wet torii offerings.
The main shrine done, I continued to the star attraction of the shrine. The world famous torii tunnel. My fantasy was to sprint through it, arms flapping, a hopeful geisha in the making. Well no. Things got gloomy again for the tunnels (there are several) were choked with traffic. Everybody was lumbering for it was slippery. You have to be on the guard against careless umbrella ribs waving into your face. And there were also all those unfazed tourists who despite clutching umbrellas and souvenirs, still paused to pose for NUMEROUS selfies, thus stalling the trek. It took me over ten minutes just to finish the first segment of the tunnel. I didn’t quite manage to film the sort of dreamy, zooming through the toriis video, which I had been planning for days.
The dense torii path offers little shelter.
I left an hour later, after making two-thirds of the way up the hill. On hindsight, months later, Fushimi Inari on a wet day wasn’t that bad a visit. I managed to see and photograph all the sights I wanted to, just not in the way I hoped for it to be. If I were to get introspective, I could say this was an experience mirroring life; you go through it never quite in the way you plan it to be, and you suck up everything along the way. That, and one other thing. One extra pair of socks is never, never enough when travelling during wet seasons. You need at least three.
During a brief respite.
