Torn over Adam Lambert. Screengrab from The Straits Times website.
Singaporean news for the week of November 23rd was dominated by two events. The opening of the $532 million National Gallery Singapore, and the release of results for the 2015 PSLE examinations. For those unfamiliar with the PSLE, that’s the examination all primary school students sit for at the age of twelve, to determine their subsequent education journey. In the midst of the hubbub generated by these two events, another incident largely went unnoticed. I only came to know of this yesterday. It involves a group of citizens petitioning against Adam Lambert’s invitation to perform in a year-end concert to be broadcasted on Singaporean free television.
I do not follow Adam Lambert. I know who he is, of course, but he doesn’t do the genres of music I’m into and truth be told, I find him unnecessarily loud. By the latter, I refer not to Lambert’s personal preferences, beliefs or endorsements, I simply find his artistic direction too loud for my tastes. That aside, I take it that he probably does have a certain level of talent and artistry. Obviously he is also quite adept at showmanship to have the sort of fame he enjoys.
Some Singaporeans feel otherwise. They do not see Lambert as only a flamboyant performer. A group started an online petition advocating his removal from the concert, voicing concerns over Lambert’s promotion of “a highly sexualized lifestyle and LGBT rights,” and stating that the man is “a performer fraught with controversy even in his home country.” Within days, the petition solicited the signatures of a few thousand and earned the support of Singaporean branch of Focus on the Family. Naturally, it also invited a swift response from opposing segments of the country. A counter petition was quickly started.
For the record, my position in the underlying conflict is somewhere in the middle, trending towards those who started the counter petition. My interest in the matter, however, is not whether an openly homosexual performer should be permitted on Singaporean free television. Instead, I’m curious as to why people start such conflicts. What are they actually hoping to achieve? What are they hoping to derive from the outcome?
For the concerned citizens and parents dead set against Lambert’s forthcoming performance, do they really believe so deeply the hypodermic needle theory of communication? Do they really believe that one viewing or several viewings of an outlandish performer could result in a change as drastic as turning homosexual? By that belief, wouldn’t any shop able to afford a mass media advertisement be enriched to the status of a Wall Street bellwether the next day?
Or perhaps it is the manifestation of a deeper anxiety. The anxiety from not having a voice in a tempest of noise. In our age of information, social relevancy increasingly seems to be defined by what you stand for, or against, and the ability to make these opinions successfully heard in the overcrowded platforms of the electronic world. Social relevancy, and in turn social influence and importance, is determined by who has the loudest voice in contests of words. To secure victory in such competitions, existing formulas are then drawn upon. And so you have tags and catchphrases imported wholesale from the current cultural powerhouse that is the United States. “Concern citizens.” “Freedom of choice.” “Discrimination.” “Gender equality.” “Gay agenda.” Etc.
Or maybe, just maybe, the real conflict is not between opposing viewpoints, but within one’s own mind. Everything done is for the substantiation of personal beliefs. Justification for a choice of personal belief through the successful manipulation of a related but indirect incident. But … that would make this post too long and frankly, I doubt I have the writing ability to discuss those areas. I have little interest in those areas too.
Anyway, going by preceding confrontations, my guess is that Lambert wouldn’t be in the concert. I could very well be wrong, but honestly, I care little because as I stated, I don’t watch Adam Lambert, and for that matter neither do I watch the free channels. It is my guess too that this wouldn’t be the last of such LGBT issues clashes and that Singapore would increasingly see more of these in years to come. The 2015 Adam Lambert Performance incident in Singapore would soon be over, in preparation for the next fracas. And very quickly, the incident itself would also be quietly abandoned and forgotten.
