Don’t be a victim of this business scam
In 2005, someone attempted to pull a fast one on me.
A terribly nasty one at that.
This was what happened. A compatriot in the same industry tried to interest me into buying over his company. This initially came as a surprise because this other company was far more established than mine, and our relationship began with me taking over the jobs they couldn’t do because of insufficient manpower. (Of course, they still managed those jobs overall and retained a cut) Anyway, I was almost sweet-talked into agreement, reason being I always thought this other company was doing very well. Thank goodness some friends stepped in and slapped sense into me. Well, they didn’t exactly slapped, but what they said made me acknowledged the signs I was seeing. Signs of how huge a con job was being pulled on me.
Yes. A con job. I was almost tricked into buying a company irredeemably in debt.
What were those signs? There were various. Six stood out. In many ways, these are all clear signs of a business scam.
Don’t be a victim of this business scam
1. An unwillingness to discuss numbers. And an unwillingness to reveal complete numbers
I requested for company accounts and statements early into the discussion. These were never given. When I pressed hard enough, singular numbers were thrown lavishly. As in, “Oh, we did a million dollars of sales last year!” Wow. But any true businessman would tell you sales figures are meaningless unless paired with costs of sales. A million dollar sales turnover, with a two million dollar cost, actually means the company is in huge deficit. This, on the whole, was what that other fellow tried hardest to hide from me.
2. Questionable portfolio
By portfolio, I mean previous work completed. Previous clients worked with, etc. Now, that fellow had very impressive clients, and in this area he managed to fool me. Until someone else pointed out that the jobs cited were all at least four years old. I don’t think anything else needs to be explained as to why this is disturbing. To say the least.
3. Invisible company suppliers
I learnt this trick from a customer. A great way to know about a company is to speak with the suppliers. Of course, this could sometimes be sensitive, but in my industry, there is little reason to hide one’s suppliers. Especially when you’re trying to sell your setup because you would want to assure business continuity. Incidentally, this was the first thing that cued me. That fellow simply refused to even tell me who his courier was.
4. Disregarding procedures
Selling a business, especially a limited company, is not a straight-forward thing. There’s a (shit)load of paperwork involved. What happened was, the fellow kept scorning these procedures as rubbish and government bureaucracy. He just wanted me to pay him the sum he wanted and fuss about paperwork later. He kept ranting about how people in the real world work, how sincerity is what it’s about and blah blah blah. Big warning sign here. To his credit, he was good enough as a salesman to vaguely move me. (Alright, I was stupid then. I agreed quite a bit.)
5. Surly staff
This is harder to explain. I made three visits to that other company throughout the weeks of “talk.” During every visit, not a single staff there smiled or made any attempt to communicate with me. Now, I’m not being egoistic here. I didn’t expect to be treated as the next boss during these visits. Instead, I thought they would be neutral, not openly hostile. After all, if I were to take over that company, wouldn’t they want to stay in their jobs, which would begin by having a positive relationship with me? Later on, I learnt the bulk of them haven’t been paid their wages for that month. The poor things.
6. Big Talk
This comes from my mum. Eh, housewife she might be, she has some things right. There is no free lunch. Nobody gives gold away. When someone keeps harping what sort of golden opportunity he is conferring on you, when someone keeps insisting how grateful you would be in the future for the blessing he is sharing with you, something is very wrong. In fact, this alone is enough of a reason to conclude a con job is at work. The joke to me nowadays is that my mum would have told that rascal to scoot within five minutes. And it’s my working life shame that I actually wasted near a month in discussion with him. When I should be attending to my own business.
PS: In case you’re wondering why I’m posting about a business scam ten years old, other than wanting to warn newer business people about such things, which happen a lot, this incident was a huge insult to me. To give you an idea, say for example that creep wanted thirty grand for his setup. His actual company debt was five times more.
