Three weeks into the exhibition, I’ve finally fulfilled my fan-guy duty and paid a visit to the Star Wars At Changi Airport exhibition. It was entertaining, plain simple fun down memory’s lane. With the crowds having thinned since opening day , I managed to shoot quite a few decent photos too. On the whole, I would say that the displays were well thought out, with good attention to details everywhere. As a Star Wars fan, I naturally would have also preferred more than two displays. How about some B-Wings over the check-in counters? An Imperial Class Star Destroyer above the whole terminal, threatening to obliterate Singapore!? A Death Star … … But, that’s getting into the Dark Side. Here are some of the photos I took.
X Wing Fighter with aspiring Padawans.
Tie Fighter and Stormtroopers.
Tie Fighter and Stormtroopers.
Stormtrooper
Being your typical obsessive fan guy/geek, I naturally got neurotic over certain details. To share, these are:
- At first glance, the X-Wing felt really large! I’m not sure whether my perception about this is due to how X-Wings were portrayed in the original trilogy. I actually thought the blue version at Changi is an updated, “modern” one. And then I remembered that classic shot of Luke getting into his first X-Wing, from Episode IV, and things felt about right.
- Conversely, the TIE fighter felt small. Or rather, the cockpit felt small. How could an Imperial pilot fit comfortably into it? Or maybe comfort was never a consideration, since TIEs were considered expendable. Maybe that’s also why they get hit so easily. The pilots were all suffering from stiff legs.
- The stormtroopers were … fantastic. Pristine white shiny gear all around. Wow. Hate to have to clean and polish that daily though.
- Merchandising area at Terminal 3 was sensible. The right size with all the usual stuffs, at expected prices. Was kinda hoping though they’d sell some items from the classic trilogy and prequel. It is a franchise, isn’t it? What better time to revive older product lines?
- Now this is a personal wish. What would complete the exhibition? Tourism promotion. Billboards advertising Star Wars locations for holidays. Party 72 hours in the spires of Coruscant. Snowboarding on Hoth. Nature study on Dagobah and P1 Pod Racing on Tatooine! As for the cherry on everything, let’s have mock announcements of departing shuttles. If any silly passenger gets confused or worried, dispatch stormtroopers to deal with the situation.
With the new trilogy opening in Singapore soon, I’m hoping too that some questions get answered. Now these are not buggy issues that had in any way dampened my love for the Star Wars franchise. But, it would be good to know. To finally have some clear answers.
- How long exactly was the trip from Hoth to Bespin? The impression given was that the Falcon took at most a few days. Which would mean that Luke trained with Yoda for approximately that amount of time too. For him to go from fledgling saviour to semi-Jedi in that short amount of time, wow, it doesn’t take a lot to become a Jedi, does it? Those Padawans who train for decades before touching their first lightsabers must be really untalented with the Force.
- Just how did Vader discover Luke is his son? The two barely met in Episode IV. I don’t think Vader even glanced very much at Luke. And suddenly everything was out in Episode V. It’s like, this was a secret protected by the last two Jedis in the galaxy, and it was hidden from even Palpatine for years. Really good if we could have a bit of (scandalous) revelations in the new movies.
- After several amendments over the years, we have more or less settled on the length of Imperial Class Star Destroyers being 1600m. Now let’s decide what we want for Home One. The latest figure on Wookieepedia puts it at 1300m. How on Naboo could that be possible?! The visual size of it in Episode VI? If it were that small, then the rest of the rebel fleet was smaller. How could they have any chance against Star Destroyer firepower? Please, 3000m at least.
- This one gets to me a lot. As a kid, I had nightmares about it, especially after reading how its victims die over A THOUSAND YEARS. The Sarlacc on Tatooine. A horrific monster hostile to all, which attacks anything dumb enough to go near it. But it also does nothing except lie in its pit. So why didn’t anyone take it out? Just fly a barge over it, drop in some thermal detonators. SPLAT! Would really be doing the whole planet a favour. If I were Jabba, no way would I tolerate having something like THAT in my backyard. It’s like, what happens if it starts crawling? Sand isn’t very difficult to tunnel through, you know.
- The Expanded Universe gives answers to the above, I know. But with the new trilogy, these tales would decisively become non-canon. Reclassified as legends, so I’ve heard. I’m glad for that because I seriously dislike the plots of the Expanded Universe novels. Han and Leia having three kids, and they end up dying and becoming evil? Chewie getting crushed? Luke marrying an Empire secret agent and then she dies too? Bleah! It was becoming a cycle of endless new characters, and then death of these characters for more new characters. Good timing for the new trilogy to step in and clean things up. For that reason alone, I eagerly anticipate the December screening.
Stormtroopers await you.
