What? You want to borrow ma lighter?
I posted this a while ago in my older FB account, and received my deserved amount of scorn.
I come from a region where we now have a new annual season. The haze reason. No thanks to both natural and manmade reasons, my country gets smothered in smog for weeks during this period, in a truly Silent Hill kinda way with a stench worthy of Pyramid Head’s loincloth. As a side-note, the 2015 haze hits a record high in severity.
Anyway, one of my little get backs at life is to have a puff in the haze. You know, standing at one of those designated smoking areas outside shopping centres, delightfully and obliviously adding to the haze, while appalled pedestrians scamper away. Childish, yes, but makes you feel more heroic than any FPS gun trotter, does it not? I was in the middle of this, one evening, when a swanky looking, fresh-faced young thing trotted up to me. Rather shyly, he inquired whether he could borrow my lighter.
Sure, why not? I handed it to him. Always a joy to assist others also in the vice.
And then he dumped his bombshell. He didn’t need it for a light, his friends and him were doing SOMETHING, SOMEWHERE else, and needed a flame. If I could remain at the smoking area for a short while, he would return the lighter within minutes.
He must have sensed my immense distrust and reluctance, for he left before I muttered any full agreement. And for the next few minutes, I was blitzed by a torrent of panicky theories. Had I just been scammed? Had fresh-faced young thing just conned me of my cheap 50 cents lighter? Was I a part of some candid camera/just for laugh gag? Was I now a part of some terrorist plot? Did he need the lighter to ignite a bomb? The sort with the wick and round iron ball. Oh gosh, was he going to set someone on fire, something on fire, the whole building on fire?!?!?!
Fresh-faced young thing returned five minutes later, with two equally embarrassed girls. They apologised for the delay, returned the 50 cents lighter and left after more apologies.
I could read a lot into this, mostly how life has gotten to me in a way I didn’t realised. The more you’ve gone through, the more you’ve seen or heard or read, the more likely you are to misattribute. The older you get, the more inclined you also are towards otherworldly conclusions, often without realising how ridiculous and illogical all of these conclusions are. In short, you start associating everything with anything.
But to state those would be getting a tad too maudlin. Instead I’d say I’m grateful for the incident, it made me realise what sort of person I was ageing into. Nope, I probably still wouldn’t be comfortable having my lighter taken away for use that way. We live in somewhat anxious times, do we not? The next time I’d probably just say no, and quickly walk away before the request is repeated.
