Enhanced Lange Interview - Our Way Home : Lange Recordings 50th Release

Hi Stuart, hope you're well! We will start in traditional fashion and ask you where Enhanced Music reaches you at this moment in time & what's going down?

I'm just about to head back from Buenos Aires! Played at a truly amazing party held in Privilege with some 4500+ Argentines partying hard!

Also fresh off the back of performing at the 550th episode A State Of Trance with Armin van Buuren a few weeks back in London at Ministry Of Sound! How was it & how did your set go down? Can you describe the atmosphere?

I played at ASOT 450 and 500 previously so already knew it was going to be an epic night. I always enjoy playing at MOS, the sound system is ridiculous and it was packed as you'd expect. The atmosphere was incredible, I can't really describe it, but it definitely didn't feel like a Thursday night & the crowd reaction was amazing! ;)

Lange Recordings has reached its 50th milestone release and you have marked this with the huge collaboration with Irish vocalist Audrey Gallagher! What has been the success to Lange Recordings and what do you look for in music that you sign?

I couldn't have asked for more for the 50th release. The track has had huge support from DJs and the clubbers, and the video has been a big hit on Youtube! It's also currently playing on MTV dance, which is a first for a release on the label, so a milestone for sure! As for the music I sign, I'm always on the lookout for 'forward- thinking' tracks; trance with a twist. There's some great new stuff coming up on the label. I played a couple of them in my ASOT550 set, namely Tangle & Mateusz - 'Minotaur', which has been doing the damage everywhere I've played it and the release scheduled after that by Lele Troniq called 'Under The Spotlight' is one to listen out for too.

How is it working with Audrey Gallagher as a vocalist - Which ideas come from whom and how does it come together in the end?

The single came together quite easily, Audrey sent me the vocal acapella and I was blown away by it! I always find tracks come together better working that way around with me producing the music around the vocal. Due to the speed of the vocal being a little higher than I had been working with recently, it pushed me into a more high energy trance direction. It was actually a nice change to be working on an epic 'big riff' trancer!

Congratulations on the Official Music video for the single which has had close to a million hits, and counting, on Youtube! What was the inspiration behind the video and did you have fun making it?

Thanks! Actually I can't take credit for the video itself. We went over a couple of story lines and picked what we thought was the best idea. It was evident to me that the producers of the video are very passionate about their work and were very excited about the track so I was confident they'd do a great job. The video actually exceeded my expectations as it's something more than your usual trance music video!

Can you take us through one production element that you have used in this record and explain why you think it is important to the track?

It's difficult to pin point one particular production technique that was essential in the track, but what I can say generally with vocal tracks is that it's well worth doing some very precise editing to the vocals to make them as neat as possible. Moving individual words so they're exactly in the right place and making sure each word of the backing vocals starts at the same point as the lead makes any track sound that much tighter. I also separate the breaths so when I compress the vocal they don't become too loud. Other tricks include changing the ambience of the vocal at various points in the track by varying effects levels so it switches from sounding very intimate to epic! Now i'm starting to sound like a nerd ;)

When was the first time you played 'Our Way Home' at a gig, and how did it go down?

It was in Edmonton in February and the reaction was great! Sometimes I like to go back after a first play and tweak the production, but I was very pleased with how it sounded.

Although the track marks the 50th release on Lange Recordings, what does Lange Recordings have coming up in the near future?

I've already mentioned the next couple of releases. In addition we also have new material from label regulars Noah Neiman, who's follow up to 'Endorush' is sounding huge(!), and Steve Brian who's got his 4th release with us in the pipeline.

You often gain recognition from the industry's biggest DJ's for your own music and DJing. But which up & coming DJ's you think have the incredible potential right now?

Actually I have to mention 2 acts from Argentina. Firstly Heatbeat, who are by no means newcomers, but have certainly released some incredible work over the past year and also Chris Schweizer is one to watch. I'd probably also mention Wezz Devall too - many great productions coming from him at the moment.

Your tour schedule is looking already extensive for 2012, what have you coming up that really excites you and what has been your favourite gig so far?

Have to say this last weekend in Buenos Aires was brilliant as was my UK double the week before. ASOT550 at Ministry of Sound and the 17th Birthday of Passion were both massive events.

Next week i'm excited to be returning to India for a 3rd time, after that I'm touring USA & Canada in April for 3 weeks. Really looking forward in particular to dropping in to Hawaii again as part of that tour ;)

That sounds like a nice trip! Finally, where can people go to 'tune in', 'tweet' & 'like' Lange?
