After a wonderful 2 week holiday spending time at home enjoying the company of family and friends, needless to say, it has been a struggle to get back into things. I'd like to start by wishing all of you a belated Happy New Years, and hope that wherever the party took you last Tuesday night, you were able to celebrate in style! But before we can properly get the ball rolling on 2014, I'd like to take this post to reflect on the year that was. Not only was 2013 a great year for me personally, with the founding of my "Banger of the Day" blog and the start of my weekly segment here on DBW later in the year, but it was also arguably the best year for electronic music since sometime in the early 90's! To take one last look back at 2013, it would be impossible to some things up in just three songs, so I chose some of my favorite year mixes! Turn it up, and let's go!!
2013 was an interesting year for trance and some of the biggest trance artists. Lead by Armin Van Buuren, there was a pretty big push by trance music into the more mainstream consciousness. While house artists have had a lot of crossover success the last few years (think David Guetta), trance has always been a different animal. Like it or not, I think 2014 is about to be a huge year for trance music outside just the trance community.
Picking mixes for this post was incredibly difficult, for the record. So many great artists at such a big year, and many of them celebrated with incredible year mixes. However, I had to give the nod to the legendary Laidback Luke. At 37 years of age, he continues to tour and collaborate with the biggest names in EDM. Besides, he worked in the opening song of the Lion King into the mix of his track with Peking Duck, Mufasa. How could I say no to that?!
What would a Banger of the Week year recap be without some raging electro? Jean Duran is a young producer who I've worked with previously on my personal blog due to our shared passion for epic bangers, and who just killed the second half of 2013. His latest mashup got a little love from none other than the great Tiesto! Put him on your ones to watch list for 2014 for sure.
Thanks again to all of the artists, readers, and other bloggers who helped make 2013 an amazing year, and an especially big thank you to Dash Berlin and everyone at DBW for letting me do my thing here! Ciao to 2013, and cheers to 2014!
